Project status updates
20-25 October 2011
Sarah Young and I had an opportunity to visit KCH near Varanasi to meet with the hospital staff and see what was happening on campus as well as with the WASH program which Sarah has been connected to since it started up. The new residence that eMi² designed for the new surgeon at KCH is currently under construction. The brick has been laid for the walls of the building and the window and door frames have been set in place. They have yet to lay the ground floor slab as well as start on the first floor slab and walls.
The WASH program is going through a change in leadership, as the person that was running it for the last several years has recently left. Thankfully, there's someone to step in and run it that is familiar enough and experienced with the program. Sarah Young took the time to evaluate where WASH is at and give suggestions for improving the work. We visited a few villages to see how the toilets and hand pumps are being used. Everywhere it seemed like the toilets were being used to maximum capacity, if not overcapacity. In the places where they didn't have toilets or hand pumps, people were asking for them to be constructed. – TMZ
13-17 February, 2011
Kacchwa Christian Hospital has been asking eMi² for some time for further assistance in designing a new residence for the surgeon who would be joining on board sometime soon. At the insistence of the surgeon, a new block was added which was not included in the initial master plan.
I left for Kacchwa on 13th February 2011 and arrived at Varanasi on 14th evening. I arrived later than expected and resorted to resting and prepare myself for the next day. Next morning Dr. Raju Abraham, his wife Catherine and some other staff member of KCH sat together to talk on the design requirement, and some issues regarding buildings that needs to be addressed immediately. Running a hospital with a mission to reach out to the local Hindu population is not easy and they shared their impending problem and complexities they meet on a regular basis.
In the meeting they unanimously approved 1200 sq.ft with three bedrooms as the standard size apartment for doctors. However there were varied opinions of the location and ultimately it was decided that the new building would be built on the footprint over existing goat shed to avoid any issues from local authority. After developing several options, the drawings below were approved to be the new residence for doctors who would join in the future.

Ivy and Ko (intern) visited KCH to review the progress with the client.
Civil works progress:
- 2 leach lines were added next to the toilet block at J Block according to the discussion in Nov 08. cover for the pit was added.
- Diversion of rain/grey water has started but not completed since they have problem getting permission to public drainage connection.
Leach lines were added at J Block
Renovation:
- B Block staff / guest unit renovation are completed.
- A big classroom next to the existing classroom building is added.
- H Block was partially renovated to give more office space.
- G Block (TC Mess) - addition of a meeting hall with new kitchen and toilets are in progress.
Addition of meeting hall at G Block
- Suggestions for office and kitchens renovation as well as the addition of lab and X-ray rooms behind the hospital were given during the visit.
The master plan was discussed again. It appears that the renovation for the strip of building behind the hospital is not needed at this point as the hospital can continue to use the space for eye patients during winter season and for emergency overflow. The new staff quarter is still desirable but will depend on the availability of fund.

Ivy and I visited KCH leaders at their staff meetings nearby. Several major setbacks in their ability to do major project works were reported. A new 62.5KVA generator for KCH is on the way and some phases of plans for underground electrical conduits for wiring have been installed. Redevelopment of the front strip of buildings along the boundary wall is complicated by land ownership issues. A covered extension of the current school building has been added to the at the rear corner of the site. The main septic tank at J Block has been remediated and is functioning without trouble. The next matter targeted is the upgrading of TC mess into a training center for smaller groups. It is desired, but may not be possible to take up work for redoing Block F. Main trainee group sizes are being reduced further to 150 to 200 persons. Ivy and several interns will be visiting the site later in the month...

Ivy and I visited KCH earlier this month to review progress and discuss the CD report with the client. Ivy was involved in assisting in the continued renovations for Block B, and also giving advice on other planned renovations / improvements. One of the septic tank remediation works was complete for toilets near Block J, but the critical septic tank in the area was in nearly the same state. They dug a pit in the rear in which to pump out effluent as an interim relief to avoid the sewage overflow into the bathing area of the center. A significant amount of time was spent working through the issues involved in remediating the large tank and giving more information about the proposed remediation. One of the KCH board members was also present, we reviewed the current masterplan.

Project Scope
Kachhwa is in Majhhwa block of Mirzapur district. Kachhwa Christian Hospital (KCH) is just 2 km away from the river Ganges and 35 km from Varanasi. The history of KCH stretches back to 1887, when British missionaries started medical work in that area and later established KCH. Missionaries from Britain and America continued to dedicate their lives for the poor in this area preaching, healing and praying in what was considered the grave yard of missions. In 2002, KCH was threatened with closure because of various financial and physical dangers. However God has raised a new generation of young Indian leaders to carry on the work with new vision, focusing on holistic transformation. Apart from the medical ministry, KCH branched out into church planting, training and primary education.
eMi² assisted KCH in designing the master plan in 1999. Since then the ministry has developed in many areas and many changes have taken place. KCH has requested eMi² to update and revise the master plan for KCH campus. The project will involve conceptual architectural and civil engineering design for the additional new facilities on campus which includes training center, conference room, community health and development office, staff quarters, primary school and multimedia center. The 100-year old power distribution system also needs redesigning. In additional to the campus development, KCH also requested assistance in designing 2 holistic centers in 2 nearby regions. Facilities for the each center include a primary school for 150 children which would be used for leadership training during holiday, a out patient clinic with spectacle shop and office. The first priority for the development would be the staff quarters and one holistic center.
The project trip will include a visit to Varanasi, one of the Hindu holy cities in India. Come and join our team!
